“I don’t know..I don’t remember…I think they didn’t have a face. Just some random party goer, poking around.” He intoned softly, smiling weakly as Nick mused his hair and he felt that small flicker of warmth. “I secretly liked it when you stuck up for me. I didn’t like seeing you get beat up though.”

He gave Nick a knowing look before sighing. He closed his eyes and tried to think of how to get it through to his friend that he wasn’t stable. “…I’ll make you a real present when we get home. You don’t need that old locator when I can just give you a new one. I just..would you ever forgive me? If I wasn’t strong enough? Would you hate me then, if I let it eat me whole until there was nothing else left?”

“Hold on, I think you may have lost some memories in your little coma there. I did not get beat up thank you very much.” He gave him an indignant look, narrowing his eyes before slowly shaking his head and sighing. ”Okay not bad anyway. And just keep that to yourself, alright? You’re the only one alive anymore that can ruin my tough guy street cred I’ve spent the last 70 years building up, got it?”

He shifted on the hard, wet asphalt, shifting his leg so he could sit on it and get in a better position. “I’m too old for presents now, Howie, I don’t need anything. Don’t worry about it.” He shot him another look and clamped a hand over his mouth, tilting his head at him. “Would you stop?! It’s like you want me to say yes or something. Like you want me tell you I’m going to give up on you. I haven’t yet, why would I now?”

“No, yes..I don’t know….I just wish things were more clear..I wish I wasn’t losing my mind.” His voice drifted into a whisper and he stared at the asphalt in front of them, eyes stinging red with the start of tears. But he wasn’t going to cry. This was not the time to cry. His tears were at best, wasted on all his broken thoughts and heart.

What scientist would ever let something like this happen to them? None. He needed to suck it up. But Howard’s always been the more emotional man despite the rumors. He simply never knew how to express himself. Emotionally stifled child, holding everything in. He hasn’t grown past his pride and messed up mind and really, he’s just being selfish. He already knows. “…Someone asked if I missed her..on my birthday..I guess I just wanted to be close, I don’t know. I barely make enough sense as it is.”

“Your mind is perfectly fine, you’re just over thinking things like you normally do. You need to let yourself relax, and stop being so worked up.” He could hear Howard’s voice start to break and he instinctively put an arm around his shoulder, mussing his hair a bit, sending water spraying before he let his arm fall back down.

“Who asked you that?” He asked quietly, tilting his head slightly and giving him an inquisitive look. “I didn’t get to beat the piss out of anyone my entire mission, I could do some for you now. It’ll be like the old days when you used to get mad at me for sticking up for you.” He nudged him lightly, even knowing in this mood he wasn’t going to get the response out of him that he wanted. “You know…it’d make her happy— knowing you need her when you’re down like this. But I think I know she’d tell you to stop getting so down on yourself. You really gotta stop letting it all eat at you so much.”

Howard doesn’t even protest to Nick picking him up and bringing him away from the railing. He sat down and Nick was being nice to him only because they were alone. If someone were here. If there were people watching him, Nick wouldn’t have stepped any closer to stop him.

Frowning up at his friend, he let the rain hit his face and held on tight to the jacket that smelled so much of his best friend. “So then what happens when you don’t need me anymore? What happens when you hate me so much, you don’t want me anymore?” He has to ask. Because they’ve drifted so far and his love doesn’t mean the same thing as it once did.

“Howard, stop.” He sighed, and against his better judgement sat down next to him, leaning his head back against the railing and staring straight across the road. “I think we’ve been through enough to safely say I’m never going to hate you. And the day I stop needing my best friend is the day I’m put into the ground, and frankly that’s not going to be for a long while.”

He fell silent for a moment listening to the rain slow nearly to a stop and turned his head to look at him. “What’s going on with you, lately? And you still haven’t told me why you’re here. Why torture yourself? Or are you still mad at me for all of this…?”
